TWIM Members Win at Oregon Senior Games!

by Candace Jacobs

Two senior TWIM members who missed the Washington State senior games on July 28, journeyed down to Corvallis OR to compete in the Oregon Senior games swim meet on August 18, 2024.  Only 57 swimmers swam in the meet, which lasted 3-1/2 hours.

National Senior Games Association (NGSA) allows for participation of out of state residents to qualify for the nationals, according to their rules:  NSGA qualifying games that permit and encourage participation by out-of-state residents are classified by the NSGA as “open.”  Each event allows for a specific number of qualifiers.  If out-of-state residents qualify at an “Open” qualifying games, they will not take away a qualifying spot from a state resident.  “Open” games may qualify the number of state residents specified for each event in addition to the out-of-state qualifiers.  The NSGA definition of an athlete’s state of residence is that state in which the person resides for at least six months out of the year.

Both Carl Haynie and Candace Jacobs brought home gold in all the events they swam, whether they won or not, though Carl actually DID win all of his events.  Out of state entrants were in a separate medal category, and if you placed in your event in your age group, you got a medal.  Nice!

A couple of those medals!

Carl took home gold in the 200 yd backstroke, the 50 yd backstroke, the 100 yd backstroke, the 200 yd IM, and the 200 yd breaststroke.  Candace took home gold in the 100 yd freestyle, the 50 yd butterfly, the 50 yd backstroke, the 50 yd freestyle, and the 100 yd IM.
