Fireworks All July Long!

So far, this has been anything but the dog days of summer as TWIMMERs have been busy tearing up the pools and lakes in July!

Continuing from our last post, the Senior Seattle Open meet at Colman Pool July 7-9 wrapped up with a bang. Thomas “COB” Walker started us off that Thursday with a superb swim in the 200 Breast taking 20 seconds off his seed time. Way to go, Tom!

Later in the day, Carl “MC” Haynie teamed up with some really fast Puget Sound Masters (PSM) swimmers in the 800 Free Relay to set a new Northwest Zone record. And Friday saw Vince “V-Man” Carmosino put in a super strong performance in the 100 breast.

On Saturday, Carl led off the 400 Medley relay with PSM-er Dan Phillips on breast, fellow TWIMMER Brad Jones swimming an absolutely awesome fly leg, and PSM-er Kirk Nelson anchoring on free.  The foursome set a new Northwest Zone record, and…psst..it would seem their time is in contention for All American status in the 200-239 age group this year!

Pool meets were not the only game in town. Maoz “The King” Alsberg competed in the Friday Night Swim Races at Lake Meridian on July 15th. Even though he says he took the scenic route during the 1.2 mile race, he won 2nd in his division. Way to go, Maoz! The Friday Night Swim Races are known for their delicious prizes. While just missing the Apple Pie, he had to settle for a huge Cinnabon instead. Poor guy…

On Saturday, July 16th, three TWIMMERs tackled the 3.2 mile open water race known as Fat Salmon. Over 250 swimmers braved the 68-degree Lake Washington water this year.

At Fat Salmon, an absolutely stellar performance was turned in by our own Kathy “The Energizer” Pelham. Competing in the non-wetsuit division (brrr!), she finished in the top ten out of 95 women, a superb achievement considering Fat Salmon draws swimmers from all across the country. Way to go, Kathy!!

Brian “Z-Man” Guillen moved up several notches in his age group placing this year as did Carl. Enjoying the warmth of their full wetsuits, they both had fun riding the waves home this year…surf’s up, dudes!  Finally, three other TWIMMERs volunteered at Fat Salmon. Thank you COB Tom, Father Tom Fritschen, and Zena Courtney!!

But July is not over yet! Looking ahead, we have one more event – this time for us “over 49” crowd – the Washington State Senior Games in Olympia on July 24th.  Should be fun!
